I personally feel that it depends totally on individual usage patterns. Perhaps small home users who dont do much dont need to run it often, but busy systems which have plenty of file being addded and deleted will benefit. Some slow old systems in our school got a huge boost from defrag. Boot times, file opening etc were much smoother after the maintenance.
